Guide: Installing GRIMLOOP on Linux with Steam Proton

This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.

1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."

Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.

Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.

2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.

3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.

4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.

What is GRIMLOOP? Features and Description

Command a ghost army built from your own past. Every 30 seconds a spectral echo replays your combat — by minute 20, 40 ghosts unleash hundreds of projectiles. A horror roguelite bullet heaven with 90+ weapons and 7 nightmare bosses.

GRIMLOOP is a horror roguelite bullet heaven where every 30 seconds, a ghostly echo of your past self appears and replays your movements and attacks. By minute 20, you command an army of 40 spectral copies firing hundreds of projectiles per second — but the nightmares of The Hollow scale faster than your echoes multiply.

      THE ECHO SYSTEM

Every 30 seconds, a spectral copy of you spawns and perfectly replays your movements and attacks from that time window — forever. Your skill matters: if you kite efficiently, your echoes kite efficiently. If you stand still and fire, you create a turret. By minute 15, your 30+ echoes fill the screen with hundreds of projectiles in a bullet storm that has to be seen to be believed.

No two runs play the same. Your movement patterns ARE your build.

      HORROR AS A MECHANIC

A Darkwood-style vision cone means you hear enemies before you see them. The first two minutes are genuinely terrifying: alone, in the dark, with things moving just outside your flashlight. Then your echoes start appearing — ghosts of yourself, fighting alongside you.

The horror shifts. You're surrounded by copies of yourself. And the nightmares are learning.

      90+ WEAPONS

Projectiles, melee arcs, orbital shields, chain lightning, ground eruptions, area pulses, homing seekers, and damage-over-time zones. Every weapon evolves into a devastating final form when mastered. Your echoes carry every weapon you do — 40 echoes with 6 weapons each means an overwhelming bullet density no other survivor-like can match.

200+ build combinations. Choose from the level-up pool every time you gain XP. Evolve weapons. Stack synergies. Break the game.

      7 NIGHTMARE BOSSES

Every boss has unique mechanics that threaten your echo army:

      • THE GARGOYLE — Petrification gaze. Stop moving or be frozen.
      • THE CRYSTAL GOLEM — Crystal armor plates you must shatter.
      • 5 more nightmares await in the depths...

      THE GRIMOIRE

Spend Soul Coins earned from each run to permanently strengthen your next attempt. More HP, faster echoes, starting weapons, rerolls, and difficulty modifiers. 5 Recursion tiers for players who want the ultimate challenge — enemies scale, rewards multiply.

      FEATURES

      • ECHO SYSTEM — 40 spectral copies replay your combat. Hundreds of projectiles per second.
      • 90+ WEAPONS — 8 families, each with an evolution path. Evolve your arsenal.
      • BULLET HEAVEN — Screen-filling projectile chaos that escalates every minute.
      • VISION CONE — Darkwood-style restricted sight. Hear enemies in the dark.
      • 7 BOSSES — Unique mechanics, multi-phase fights. Each threatens your echoes differently.
      • 20-MINUTE RUNS — From alone-in-the-dark to overwhelming bullet storm.
      • THE GRIMOIRE — Permanent meta-progression between runs.
      • 30 ACHIEVEMENTS — Challenges, milestones, and secrets.
      • HORROR ATMOSPHERE — Dynamic music, weather, biome shifts after each boss.
      • FULL CONTROLLER SUPPORT — Gamepad with dynamic input glyphs.
      • STEAM CLOUD — Progress syncs across machines.

Escape the recursion — or be consumed.
