Guide: Installing One Of Us on Linux with Steam Proton

This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.

1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."

Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.

Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.

2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.

3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.

4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.

What is One Of Us? Features and Description

One Of Us is a modern real time strategy game featuring new first person style controls, with traditional control methods also available. Play the 4 different factions in 13 game modes, including base building, Battle Royale, Escape The Tide, first person shooter and zombie modes.

One Of Us is a real time strategy game with various different game modes to play, in some game modes you'll build a base and units to attack the enemy, and in others you'll have control over just a small squad or single unit to fight it out against all the other squads. The main game from the intro screen is a good place to start if you want a longer game where you build a base, whereas if you want to jump straight into the action trying the Battle Royale mode is a good place to start.

In the main game, you can choose the AI income multiplier, if you're new to RTS games you probably want to try somewhere low like 0.50x or below, so the enemy doesn't build many units so you can get used to the game. If you've played RTS games before then somewhere around 1.00x would be good, if you're very experienced with RTS games then you can probably challenge yourself to 1.50x and beyond once you've got used to the game.

One Of Us uses first person style controls by default, so you can move around using WASD, and Q/E to lower and raise your height (build more power plants & comms centers for extra height). You can use TAB when you want to switch between accessing the UI and controlling the first person character. To build from a building, you can left click on the building in first person mode, the game will switch to UI mode automatically so you can choose what you want to build from the UI. You'll need to build refineries to collect the crystals, extra harvesters can be built from the refineries. There are various unit production buildings that you can build units from.

One useful unit to build is the mobile building platform from the light weapons factory, this allows you to build near it, so move it near another patch of crystals to build a refinery there, or near the enemy base later on to build a unit production building right on the enemy's doorstep. You can also see the enemy's fog of war, so you can hide your new base where the enemy can't see it!

Some of the game modes available:

- Outbreak, traditional RTS base building battle, against an AI team of zombies. You only have use of infantry in this game mode, and any units lost to the zombies will become zombies themselves so keeping your units alive is very important, the medic may come in useful in this game mode.

- Mech Survival, traditional RTS base building battle, but you control the game from within the player mech. Which means your view is limited to being close to the ground and your movement speed is slow. This game mode makes controlling a large battlefield more of a challenge. Your player mech also has a health bar, so the AI will attack you personally, you must survive until the end of the match in order to win.

- Battle Royale, 100 teams of up to 5 squad members fighting it out in a battle royale. Collect crates for extra ammo, units, lives, powerups etc.

- Mech Royale, same as battle royale, but instead of a squad you take control of the player mech in first person shooter mode.

- Escape The Tide, infantry only squad mode, where you have to fight it out amongst the other teams whilst also racing the tide to get to the highest point on the map so your squad members don't drown.

I hope you have fun with the game, there's a lot to learn to get really good at the game, but with a few basic controls you should do just fine. In the adaptations menu you'll find various ways of changing the game, such as game modes, control methods, maps, factions, building toggles so you can play as air units only, naval units only, infantry units only etc. There's lots in there to make each game different from the last, get experimenting!
