Guide: Installing Bacteria on Linux with Steam Proton

This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.

1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."

Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.

Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.

2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.

3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.

4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.

What is Bacteria? Features and Description

'Bacteria' - A relaxing puzzle game based on the rules of the cellular automaton ‘Life’ devised by John Horton Conway in 1970.

'Bacteria' - A new puzzle game from the creators of 'Energy Balance' and 'Energy Cycle'.

This game is based on the rules of the cellular automaton ‘Life’ devised by John Horton Conway in 1970.
(You can read more about how it works in greater details here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway's_Game_of_Life )

In 'Bacteria' you have a square game field that is in some form of a stable state. You need to add in a certain number of cells so that, after a few steps, the field will be halted (in colored mode) or even cleared (in "hard" black & white mode). You could draw in single points, or use standard 'Life' patterns like "Gliders" (they move at an angle) and "Lightweight spaceships (LWSS)" (they move in a straight line).

Depending on the difficulty level, the player can use a smaller area to add new cells.

User Reviews

“Bacteria offers players over 30 levels to help them understand The Game of Life in an enjoyable, relaxed setting. Ambient music combine well with an interesting puzzle concept that results in accessible mathematics for those that can endure feeling like they’re winning one second and realizing they’re losing the next.”
8.5/10 – Games Ring

“Si vous adorez les mathématiques, si vous aimez faire fonctionner votre cerveau, si vous raffolez de bonne musique, si vous jouez uniquement aux niveaux très difficiles dans les jeux, alors, n’attendez plus ! Le jeu Bacteria est sur Steam pour moins d’un euro, ne vous privez pas !”

“Bacteria is one of those funny games that in some ways can’t really be considered a game. Sure it has puzzle levels, but the main fun lies in just throwing things onto the screen and seeing what happens. If you’re interested in Conway’s Game of Life or you just like watching pretty patterns then you cannot go wrong with Bacteria. It’s advertised as a relaxing puzzle game and it really delivers on the relaxation.”
