Guide: Installing Anything But A Gun on Linux with Steam Proton

This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.

1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."

Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.

Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.

2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.

3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.

4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.

The better you play the higher your score will go and you'll even see the world become more vibrant in real time. After three levels, you'll fight the boss - the head of the company. If you die at any point, you'll have to start over from the beginning, but don't worry. Every achievement you earn grants you a buff that persists across all your attempts. Good luck beating this game using anything but a gun.

Weapons

Weapons in Anything But A Gun are the highlight and key of our gameplay. Find and discover 20 unique weapons. Ranging anywhere from mundane objects like Laser Pointers to wacky options like an air frier that fires dino-nuggie summons to chomp and bite at your enemies.

In Anything But A Gun the weapons go beyond their realistic day to day uses, your creative interpretation of mundane objects is what makes them lethal. It could be a hobby horse or it could be divorce papers. There are a ton of weapons to discover just like those.

Every weapon has promotions that the weapon can receive allowing you to change the playstyle of those weapons. Turn a simple duck duck goose into an explosive bird dealing massive AOE damage by giving it the Explosive promotion. Or turn an unfortunate divorce into a healing moment with the Family Photo promotion on the Divorce Papers. There are many types of promotions to discover and experiment with in Anything But A Gun.

Rogue-lite Gameplay

In Anything But A Gun when you die that's it. Your weapons, your progress, all of those things are lost... with a couple of exceptions.

Our Achievements in the game make and change your future runs. Some simply give you extra health, others allow you to unlock the ability to promote weapons or buy ammo. The achievements change the game making you stronger on every progressive run.

For our more concerned players, currently the game has access to the boss and the level selects. So if you die and wish you could continue, you can!

Accessibility

Anything But A Gun includes controller support and in-game toggles for ammo, health, and currency, letting players adjust the experience to their preferred pace and difficulty. We are committed to expanding accessibility support over time.
