This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.
1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."
Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.
Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.
2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.
3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.
4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.

Pilot your mining rig through a procedurally generated planet with 18+ material types, from surface organic soil to deep crystal formations and molten lava. Terrain is fully destructible carve tunnels, caverns, and strip-mine your way to solvency. The deeper you go, the harder the rock, the rarer the ore, and the stranger things get.
FIGHT
The local fauna objects to your resource extraction. Underground horrors, crawlers, spitters, burrowers, and worse, grow more dangerous with depth. Unlock 13 weapons and tools across your journey, from your starting shovel to artifact-grade Nova Beams and Ultra Lasers. Deploy bombs, floating sentries, homing missiles, and regenerating shields. You'll need all of it.
DISCOVER
Eight ancient artifact chambers lie sealed beneath the surface, each guarded by increasingly powerful sentinels. These aren't random ruins. They're locks in a planet-sized prison, and every artifact you activate weakens the seal. Collect 20 audio logs from a previous doomed expedition. Piece together the truth about what the corporations really sent you to find.
UPGRADE
Build outpost benches to research new weapons, upgrade your tools, and improve your ship. Boost hull integrity, fuel capacity, thruster power, and more. Sell mined materials at outpost terminals to fund your progression or strip the biosphere for quick cash and deal with the ecology enforcement.
SURVIVE
Manage fuel, health, and an escalating debt. Navigate lava flows, toxic gas explosions, and indestructible bedrock formations. Die and you lose everything, your cash, your inventory, your dignity. A death drop marks where you fell, but getting back to it is another matter entirely.
UNCOVER THE CONSPIRACY
Your HR liaison is suspiciously cheerful. Your supervisor has "a bad feeling." The R&D director keeps filing urgent reports that get ignored. And the CEO of Production United has plans for you that go far beyond mining quotas. The story unfolds with a cast of corporate characters, each with their own agenda.
