This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.
1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."
Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.
Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.
2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.
3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.
4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.

An hour-long tower defense game. The clock strikes 13 AM, which means that the Visitors are coming to your house. Place a variety of ghosts to defend yourself and to light up the darkness. Can you survive for one hour?
The clock should have gone from 12:59 AM to 1 AM. However, it now shows 13 AM, an hour that shouldn’t exist. An eye has appeared on your computer screen, informing you that you’re about to receive visitors and that you must stop them from entering your home for one hour. Your only means of defense is a security program on your computer that lets you view a security camera feed and deploy holographic ghosts capable of making the visitors disappear. Throughout the story, you’ll speak with the strange eye on your screen while trying to survive through this impossible hour.
The game is a tower defense title, a type of strategy game where you place units to defend a location. In this case, you place ghosts in a hallway to protect your home. There are different types of ghosts that unlock as you progress. You start with the Luminous Ghost, which lights up the hallway and generates plasma. When a ghost turns black, you can click on it to gain one plasma point. You’ll need to spend plasma points to place any kind of ghost. Another ghost you begin with is the Orboo, which shoots energy orbs at the visitors to damage them. Place Orboos farther from the visitors so they can attack from a distance. Keep in mind that if a visitor touches a ghost, the ghost disappears, so it’s riskier to place them near the end of the hallway.
The game is divided into 12 levels, each lasting 5 minutes. You start every level with just one plasma point and no ghosts placed in the hallway. Visitors appear throughout each level, and as time passes, they become tougher and more numerous. You don’t need to destroy them all, you just have to survive for 5 minutes, though that usually means defeating as many of them as possible. If a visitor reaches your house (the end of the hallway), you lose and must restart the level from the beginning. The game auto-saves your progress, so even though it’s a short videogame, you can play it across multiple sessions without worrying about losing your progress.
