This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.
1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."
Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.
Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.
2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.
3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.
4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.

Viruses & Exploits - Just like in the real world, malware comes in strains. Named, categorized threats. In this game, it's no different. You'll choose what you are creating, name it, and unleash it strategically on targets you think are vulnerable. You can't be careless. Messing with the wrong people will quickly get your virus detected. It would be smart to scan your targets before attacking to gauge where their defenses are vulnerable. If you are prominent and powerful enough, your virus and its name will become infamous.
Simulated Environment - The world reacts to you. The in-game crypto market is dynamic and always moving. Invest in the long term, and you can become leagues richer than your enemies. Collectible hNFT items are like property, with varying supply and rarity. You'll trade, auction, and barter with real people trying to control a live market to make even more money and premium currency. The better you are at it, the more gameplay buffs and powers you can acquire unique to most others.
Manage a Botnet - Pool your compromised systems together and use their processing power for your own. Mine crypto, use the power to defend yourself from attacks, or go offensive and use the power in coordinated DDoS attacks with your organization.
Organizations & Social - hackSociety is a very social game. Making friends and working with people you know can make or break you. Organization Tournaments pay out in heaps, with premium currency you'll need to upgrade your tools. It also doesn't hurt to have your name attached to the most fearsome, powerful organizations around on the network. You'll customize your profile to your liking, and flex your inventory and status with it in the in-game chat.
Defenses - You're a target too. In hackSociety, you'll need to learn how to keep yourself safe from people like yourself. Firewall, antivirus, drive encryption, and your opsec will all keep your system safe in their own way. You'll learn while playing that nothing is a catch-all. A good antivirus isn't a magic shield, and an intensive firewall has its own weaknesses.
Live Service - You can expect lots of gameplay updates and extensions of the game. The possibilities are endless with a thorough hacking simulator like hackSociety, and you and the community control the future of the game.
