This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.
1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."
Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.
Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.
2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.
3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.
4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.
Customize your hero by choosing your base stats, class, weapon load-out, and passive skills! Your build determines how fast you run, how high you jump and of course how much damage you deal! Test your build on a monster-slaying adventure, leveling up as you go.
The world is in need of a warrior, mage, rogue, or any kind of hero that you can build-craft into existence. Pick a class, a weapon and off-hand equip, a passive skill, and your base stats to go slay some gobbos! Your adventure will likely be short-lived, so there will be plenty of chances to experiment!
What to expect from this game:
It's a roguelike
A high amount of build customization before you start a run
A high amount of customization during a run
Your build changes how your character feels to control, jump higher, more control, faster running, base stats make your character truly unique.
9 classes to choose from, each with their own set of abilities
8 weapons to equip, each with their own strengths and weaknesses
3 different defensive skills to pick to further customize how your hero deals with problems
Countless passive skills to buy along the way.
A lot of enemy variety.
Different types of rooms that might be harder or easier due to your build, pick the best ones for maximized gold!
NPCs who (usually) help you out
The effect of your character stats:
Many factors change how your character moves, your stats change how your character controls at a fundamental level.
In addition to increased attack power, your Strength also improves your jumping, opening up paths that might be harder to reach for others.
Agility affects your critical hit chance, but also makes you more maneuverable in the air, making it easier to weave through enemy attacks.
More attack speed is great, but your Speed stat also improves your running, truly opening up that option of building a "dashing" rogue!
Not that interested in physical abilities? No worries, mental stats are very powerful when using magic!
