Guide: Installing Velocity One on Linux with Steam Proton

This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.

1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."

Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.

Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.

2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.

3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.

4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.

What is Velocity One? Features and Description

Velocity One is a Futuristic Track Challenge game that resembles your favorite mid-to-late 90s futuristic racing games, but with stunning, modern atmospheric environments and a truly terrifying amount of loops and inversions. And this time... you are not magnetized to the track.

90s Futuristic Racing Physics with the Graphics and Tracks you always dreamed of

          • Race against the clock while working towards a high score through dozens of track elements.

          • Progress though four planets, each having one planet-wide track that is FIVE to SEVEN times longer than the standard futuristic racer track.

          • Feel the satisfaction of making it through a multitude of loops, batwing inversions, and cobra rolls, despite how badly gravity wants to bring you down!

          • Practice and develop your skills on three unique hand-crafted practice tracks that are of completely different design than the main challenge tracks. Then turn around and try them in the opposite direction if you want three more tracks to burn through!

          • Defeat the different cup difficulties to unlock a secret level that has unlockable track sections with twists, heights and visuals that you will never forget.

          • Each cup difficulty has different physics to match the intensity of the challenge. Changes in turning radius, top speed, acceleration and gravity add four times the variety to over 30 minutes of single-lap tracks.

          • Feel the intensity of what futuristic racing in the 90s required from it's players: determination, progression, focus, and laser-fast reflexes.

What to know before you buy:

          • Velocity One is an arcade cup racer where you are only required to beat the two hardest difficulties to complete the game. This cannot be done in less than 40 minutes. And that's if you have developed some serious skill. The game is dependent upon gaining skill with the physics of the bike from zero to hero! Each time you play, you will see vast improvements in your skill, and this is what will allow you to beat the final difficulties. Velocity One does not save player progress in-between sessions. Save files will do you no good here. It's all up to you to be ready to face the two hardest difficulties in a row.

          • This game was created by one sole developer with the help of some family and friends. Some aspects of the game are minimal such as the UI, menus and options. We hope that starting up a game, pressing a key and immediately getting into the action will be refreshing to players. In an age where sign-ups, character creation and customization halt you from starting the experience, we wanted to make a game where you open the game and just immediately get to play. The sole designer of this game made sure to focus on what you came here for:  hand-crafted tracks, overwhelming speed, jaw-dropping planet environments, and a whole lot of Loops!

          • Velocity One requires you to use both the mouse and keyboard at certain times and also highly recommends that you use a gamepad when controlling the vehicle. The controls of the vehicle are functional with a keyboard, but this is the type of vehicle game where you're going to want to cling on to a gamepad for dear life. There is only one time you will need to reach over and use the keyboard during driving gameplay, and that's if you would like to toggle the instructions for the driving controls.

          • Pipes and barrels are experimental and were added to the game later on and left in just for fun. The camera does not respond well when you go upside down in these pipes. You will need to traverse through these pipes during the game, but you are NOT required to go upside down on them or collect any points when upside down. You are NOT required to collect every point orb on a level, as there are plenty of point orbs on each planet to reach the high score (even on the hardest difficulty). Updates to the camera code and other additions to the game will depend on a small community of gamers being willing to purchase the game and tell others about it. Moderate to significant sales will determine how much time will be put into updating and adding features to the game.

          • There are no AI opponents in Velocity One. Your only opponent is the track itself, and it is a very difficult rival. Levels are completed by making your way to the end of each 5-7 minute long, single-lap track before the time limit of that track. In addition, you will also need to collect enough point pickups to reach the score requirement of that track.

          • The physics are modeled after real vehicle physics. Expect to flip, spin, and tumble as you gain skill in learning how to navigate the twists and inversions of each track. This is not a game where you can simply slam on the gas and scrape along turns, ping-ponging your way to the finish. There will be times when letting off the gas is helpful and times when braking is crucial. Gaining skill in Velocity One will take time, and for this reason, we actually give you more lives to retry the races when you choose the harder difficulties. Once you feel like you're ready to beat the game, free up about an hour and a half of your time to attempt the two hardest difficulties back to back, and that's all that's required to proudly say that you've come out victorious!

          How to play:

          • On the title screen, simply press a key (a, w, or d) to select which difficulty you'd like to play

          • As the first person character, explore the race station to find your bike

          • Walk into the bike once you are ready to race

          • Beat the time and score requirements to progress to the next level

          • Repeat the process of finding and walking towards the bike on subsequent levels

          • The second level has a feature that allows you to race on practice tracks. When you wish to use these, walk into the orb next to the bike that says "Practice Tracks". Whenever you'd like to leave the practice tracks, drive into the orb on the starting platform that says "Main Heat".

          • On the final level, find your way to the finish which will be a large orb with text above it saying "Game Complete". You may retry the course as many times as you need to until you make it to the "Game Complete" orb.

          • Try to beat all the difficulties! If you complete every difficulty, you will see a 100% printed below the completed difficulties list on the title screen. Please take a screenshot of this and email it to us! We can't wait to see the first victor, other than us of course :)

          • Lastly, enjoy our hand-crafted track designs with over 20 inversions! Every track piece is unique, and there isn't a single turn or track section that was reused. It was all designed free-form from start to finish!

          Drive Responsibly!!
