This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.
1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."
Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.
Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.
2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.
3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.
4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.
In this 2D top-down action adventure, control John W. Beans and uncover the reptilian conspiracy. Sharpen your angle to hit your target. Use a revolver loaded with pea cans and other peculiar weapons. Ride down a river, explore arid landscapes, underground bases, and discover some secrets.
John W. Beans is a top-down action game, sprinkled with adventure, exploration, and secrets, that will test your mastery and precision with analog sticks.
Be precise with your angle to line up the enemy within the FOS (Field of Shot), represented by two lines marking the shooting area. Hold the shoot button to make John automatically aim if the enemy is within that area, and release it to fire a canned pea with pinpoint accuracy. While you can disable the FOS lines for an added challenge, the shooting area will still exist, and John will keep auto-aiming if the enemy is inside it. But if you really want to show off your skills, try taking down enemies without relying on the FOS — doing it manually is far more satisfying.
These guys, the reptilians, will stop at nothing to take down John. Besides dodging projectiles, you’ll also have to avoid obstacles.
Try all the paths, you never know what's at the end, and you might discover valuable items or secrets.
John W. Beans is a humble farmer striving to fulfill the dream his parents couldn’t achieve in their lifetime. He has discovered an incredibly cheap method of producing canned corn, and his goal is to bring it to those who need it most. But just when everything starts going well, one night, while he sleeps, a strange ship lands in his fields. When he wakes up, he realizes someone is destroying his crops and ruining his dream. Without a second thought, Beans heads to the site and discovers the culprits: strange and powerful reptilian beings.
While investigating his bean field, he makes a crucial discovery: these creatures are vulnerable to them! Wasting no time, John rushes back home for his hat, because now he’ll need your help to grab his revolver and some explosives. Together, you’ll face the reptilians and uncover the hidden truth behind this invasion.
As you may have noticed, you won't be alone on this adventure: you'll have explosives, an item to improve your aim, and three peculiar weapons that will add variety to your arsenal.
Need even more power? John's fists are also ready to go into action when things get tough.
Worried about your safety? Don't fear, you can also use an old metal funnel that, against all odds, works as an improvised shield. Fashion and protection have never been so united!
And remember: if your hat gets knocked off, you'd better be quick to put it back on... or you'll be doomed.
The game will implement achievements.
