Guide: Installing Spacegolf! on Linux with Steam Proton

This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.

1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."

Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.

Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.

2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.

3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.

4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.

What is Spacegolf!? Features and Description

Spacegolf! Golf your way through the universe while unraveling the deeper mysteries happening within the Dark Star Corporation.

Spacegolf! is a game about golfing in space. By using a genius mad scientist's technology, it is possible to give life to lifeless planets! The two robots are always there to help with a tricky course or to break up the monotony on the ship. The mad scientist will send transmissions to the ship to check up on your progress, but he may have deeper motivations that it initially appears.

Each planet has its own gravity that will effect the trajectory of the ball. The planets also have different surface properties that can affect the ball's movement. Each combination of gravity and planet surface creates unique challenges. Try to become a master of Spacegolf! if you dare.

Gameplay Overview:

As expected in golf, the goal of each hole is to get the ball into the hole in the fewest strokes possible. As the name of the game implies, it's not just golf. Each planet has different properties that will affect the trajectory and flight of the ball.

  • Aim the ball and control the shot strength by moving the mouse away from the ball. The strength and angle will be indicated on screen, but all hole properties will need to be accounted for in order to achieve the intended trajectory.

  • Gravity: The planets making up each hole have gravity that varies in strength and affected area. The area and amount of gravity must be accounted for to achieve the desired shot. Be mindful about whether a planet's gravity is weak, intense, or even anti-gravity.

  • Surface properties: The planets are made up of different materials that will affect how the ball behaves once it lands on a planet. Some planets are made of grass which results in a more typical golfing surface while other planets are made of lava which does not allow the ball to land. Sandy planets, rocky ones, or even icy ones are all in the mix which will affect what happens to the ball once it comes in contact with a planet.

  • Motion: Planets in space aren't always stationary. Planets often have orbital patterns that make the hole have an element of randomness and chance. Watch the patterns carefully and time your shot.
