This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.
1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."
Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.
Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.
2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.
3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.
4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.

Since the surroundings are so unstable for that many penguins, you have been selected to lead the advance party to find more permanent nestings. Whispers of a distant, thriving flock have drifted across the freezing antipodial landscape on the breezy winds. Somewhere beyond the shimmering horizon lies a thriving safe haven… if you are brave enough to embark on the perilous journey to find it!
The Antarctic is magnificent but merciless. Bitter blizzards, shifting ice floes and the bone-deep cold threaten every wobbling step you take. Beneath the waves nearby, sleek outlines of hungry orcas can be seen. These fearsome beasts patrol the murky sub-zero waters, waiting for one false move.
Make your way boldly and unfalteringly across this frozen frontier and lead your penguin and their colony towards a brighter future — before the unforgiving cold claims you! Brrrrr.
GAMEPLAY
Waddle, slide, dive and hop through Antarctica’s sweeping icy wastes as you guide your determined penguin towards a home that can sustain its colony. Each step you take away from the fellow penguins depletes your body heat, making every footstep count. Keep going - your flock depends on you!
From the moment you set off, the frozen world becomes a battle for survival. Warm zones — rare geothermal vents, sun-soaked ice ridges, or sheltered snow alcoves — serve as crucial checkpoints where your penguin can recover its bodyheat and reassess the path ahead. Choosing the right route becomes part strategy, part intuition, and part daring. Remember penguin pals: Always follow the foliage!
This is a 3D speedrunner action adventure with a quirky twist - you’re not against the clock, but the freezing Antarctic temperatures! The wilderness stretches out in dazzling whites and shimmering blues, concealing both wonder and danger.
As the game progresses, your treks grow longer and more treacherous between checkpoints. Environmental hazards intensify with every precarious step, including:
- Icy paths that are blasted by the searing chill factor.
- Large mountains, hills and snowdrifts to negotiate your way around.
- Sudden snowstorms that reduce visibility, challenging your navigation skills.
- Floating ice drifts that require timing and agility to cross safely.
- Curious wildlife—both friendly and not so affable—such as meddling skuas or wild orca.
As the journey unfolds, the challenges escalate. Early levels ease you into the rhythm of exploration, but soon you’ll face longer distances, fiercer temperatures, and even the jaws of rapacious orcas. Don’t fall fowl of the fearsome predators!

Across 12 handcrafted levels, you’ll travel through varied Antarctic regions, from windswept plateaus to crystal-blue ice caves and roaring coastal cliffs. Two special underwater stages let you slip beneath the waves, weaving through kelp-lit tunnels while avoiding stealthy orcas and racing against your limited breath.
Throughout your adventure, you’ll uncover subtle signs of other penguin colonies — feather trails, abandoned nests, and distant calls echoing over the ice — hinting that you’re drawing closer to your target. The landscapes shift from calm, through to bleak and perilous, then culminating in an increasingly hopeful breath-taking final approach where the fate of your colony hangs in the balance.
Lively animations and a quirky, upbeat soundtrack accompany your journey, balancing cosy charm with Antarctic grandeur. Whether you’re belly-sliding down powdery slopes or standing bravely against a roaring blizzard, every moment brings you closer to your penguin’s bright new future.
