This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.
1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."
Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.
Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.
2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.
3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.
4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.
Defend Billy and his crew on their way to the extraction zone! You have been authorized to use the defense system. Protect them from giant bugs, malfunctioning droids and more...
Get them home! We need you to defend Billy and his crew as they make their way to the extraction zone at Drop City #237. The transport ship, Lockwood, was shot down and crash-landed on the desert planet Kernas! You’ve been authorized to use the defense system to escort them safely. Protect them from giant bugs, malfunctioning droids, and more…
Their journey to safety will be depicted through a hand-drawn comic.
Make sure the enemy doesn’t breach the defensive gates, or Billy won’t make it home!
5 Base towers, each with its own function. Choose to upgrade them into one of two branching specializations, totaling 15 unique towers with their own special abilities. These can be upgraded even further! Will you burn your enemies with the flamethrower, or perhaps snipe them from afar? The choice is yours!
You won’t have to rely solely on your towers—you can also use powerful abilities to get you out of tight spots!
48 unlockable skills to acquire! Earn medals based on your performance in missions and use those to unlock them. Get new active abilities or improve the ones you have already. Or maybe you prefer to upgrade the abilities of your towers? Notice that what you unlocked isn't working for you? Reset your skills and redistribute them as you see fit!
Your towers are powerful, but so are your enemies! They have their own skills to help them break through your defenses. Place your towers wisely to counter their special abilities.
16 Playable levels: Traverse 4 different Biomes and lay waste to your enemies!
5 Base towers: Each upgradeable from MK I to MK III then you specialize them!
10 Tower Specializations: Choose between 2 specializations for each of your base towers. Each with their own special upgradeable skills.
3 Difficulties: Determine your own difficulty from easy to hard. How fast can you handle the waves?
2 Game modes: Regular and Hardcore. Is the normal game too easy? Try Hardcore, where you play through the game with just one hit point, earn only 1 medal per completed level, face constant hard difficulty, and have no skill resets. Good luck!
4 Active abilities: Support your towers with your own abilities, which can be upgraded through unlockable skills!
48 Unlockable skills: Earn medals by completing levels and use these to unlock powerful upgrades for abilities and towers!
Database: A collection of data about encountered enemies. To learn about your enemies or specific aspects of a tower.
Over 30 Enemies: Each with their own abilities and behavior.
3 Boss fights: Big, mean and not easily killed.
Comic: 12 hand-drawn pages telling the story of Billy and his crew, all stored in a rewatchable database.
Customization: Choose from several different colors for your UI. Because not everyone likes the same colors.
