This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.
1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."
Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.
Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.
2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.
3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.
4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.
A top-down action roguelite with deliberate, Souls-inspired combat. Wield relics of vanished gods, forge devastating builds from spell and steel, grow stronger with every run, and crush the wretches in your way.
A top-down action roguelite built around deliberate, skill-based combat with a Souls-like edge. Master telegraphed enemies, manage scarce healing, and forge powerful builds as you fight your way through a fractured world.
The world has fractured into a chaos of drifting realms. The gods have fallen silent, their power left behind you to harness. You are an unbound child of the divine, a spirit possessing mortal vessels in a desperate, cyclical journey toward the world’s core.
Death is not the end. It is a necessary retreat. Early attempts can be punishing, but each failure brings you back stronger, revealing new truths, new powers, and a path closer to restoring this broken reality.
The fight for survival demands mastering your weapon, spells, or a mix of both in deliberate, skill-based Souls-lite combat. Enemy attacks are clearly telegraphed, but your approach is defined by the tools and build you select: do you rely on positioning, dodges and parries, control foes with stagger and status effects, or maintain distance with spell-heavy precision? Every encounter is designed around clarity and avoidable damage. Health and healing are scarce, ensuring that the better you master your current build's specific strengths, the further you will push into the shattered realms.
Designed to be challenging but fair, the game rewards persistence: early attempts may be punishing, but growing mastery and permanent upgrades gradually shift the balance in your favor.
Discover powerful synergies and make run-defining choices to craft your character's build. While combat mastery is core, smart build decisions can dramatically amplify your strengths or compensate for weaknesses.
Weapon and Spells: Choose your weapon and spells for the run from randomized options with different playstyles and strengths each
Talents: Choose from a few randomized talents on most level-ups, with rarities from Common to Epic and rare Legendary powers unlocked through endgame Realm Distortions.
Divine Relics: Find powerful artifacts the vanished gods left behind, immediately providing a major power boost and shaping your build's direction (e.g., elemental mastery or defensive fortitude).
Infusions: Transform your abilities with these modifications, allowing you to spec spells into specialized tools, like a mana-restoring engine or a critical-strike trigger.
Forks of Fate: Twice in a run, you must choose between significant run-long tradeoffs. Do you chase raw power, embrace calculated risk, or balance both?
Every attempt leaves something behind for you to build on. Titan essence collected during a run can be invested in the Sanctuary to unlock permanent upgrades, transforming every death into a step toward victory. Permanent upgrades steadily increase your survivability and power, making each new attempt more manageable.
Plan your route across a semi-randomized world map where each node offers distinct rewards, risks, and opportunities to shape your run. Choose between relic hunts, combat trials, upgrades, or more permanent currency as you push deeper toward the core. Along the way you encounter some of the world’s surviving denizens from whom you can learn more about the world’s state and the forces that shaped it.
Each run helps you grow stronger, more capable and more prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.
