Guide: Installing Manacaster on Linux with Steam Proton

This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.

1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."

Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.

Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.

2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.

3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.

4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.

      The Classic Card Battler

Manacaster is a streamlined, balanced deckbuilder where you destroy opponents with monsters & magic spells. Explore the city map in Rogue Mode, practice against AI, or challenge a player in PVP. No mana screw, power creep, or micro-transactions.

"One of the best-balanced strategy games I’ve ever played."

      • Clash Royale world champion, Thunderstruck

"This already looks incredible. Very interesting.”

      • SPIEL Essen Livestream Host, Brettman

"True to its roots as a classic card-battler."

      • Legend‑Ranked Hearthstone Player, PowerLaws

Our objective as designers was to build a system that rewards intelligent strategy & and clever tactics, not good luck.  There are game modes for the casual, the competitive, and the solo enthusiast, all of which benefit from being incredibly well-balanced.

      Tight, Mathematical Game Balance

The Power and Mana Cost of every single card and ability in Manacaster is carefully calibrated according to a strict mathematical algorithm, leading to intense battles that keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you demanding a rematch.

This balance system is what allows us to add new cards without making up new rules or risking power-creep.  Significant buffs and nerfs are applied to the underlying abilities that make up cards, not the cards themselves.  This means no more "my favorite card got banned".

Manacaster turns the one-of-a-card restriction into a mechanic that encourages diversity in deckbuilding.  Since each deck in Manacaster contains 50 unique cards, no duplicates, players are encouraged to "dig deep"  when looking for "that perfect 50th card".

With 800 cards available to deck builders, finding the right tool for the job is only a few filters away.

If you don't want to browse through all the cards, try Draft Mode where you'll compete against our AI as you see 14 bundles of 9 cards and pick from them to build your decks.

You can also just pick a pre-made deck to play; they're designed to teach you how to play the game and they use powerful cards.  No watered-down preconstructed decks.  Good, tight strategies that demonstrate actual synergy!

The Depth is in the Details

The rules and keywords in Manacaster are as simple as possible, but don't mistake simple for shallow.  Once you start chaining together keywords like Rally, Focus, Twinstrike and Heavy, you'll realize that this game is anything but simple, and soon enough you'll be opening up the deck builder to try constructing your own.

To ensure player skill is always rewarded more than luck, we've made some changes to the typical card-battle rulesets.  Every rule exists to minimize ( but not eliminate! ) randomness in situations where it's just more fun to give the players choice and agency!

      Life Points as Resource

As you see below, life points are spent ( and gained ) like a resource.  Paying life helps unlock special abilities and can reduce the mana cost of Action cards.

      Risk...reward...

      Standalone Mana Deck

Players get to pick their mana card each turn.  Single-color mana cards can be used right away. Dual-color mana enter tapped unless you pay 1 life.  Triple-color mana enter tapped unless you pay 2 life.  Build your mana deck before the game and enjoy deploying your Units and Actions on-curve.

Opening Hand Draft ( aka Mulligan System )

You are given 14 cards from your 50-card deck from which you must compose your opening hand of 7 cards, but here's the neat part; you don't have to keep any of them, and you can cheat by keeping 8!  No more mulligan'ing to oblivion.  You'll always start with at least 7 cards in hand, every game, no matter what.

Manacaster has a variety of game modes that allow players to enjoy the game in whatever format they find most comfortable.   Some players love the thrill of outplaying a live human opponent, while others prefer to enjoy solo campaign modes.  Here are some of the modes you can play in Manacaster.

Explore the city map in Rogue Mode

Select from one of six Elemental nodes to begin your path through the map.  Your opponent will be drawn from a pool of decks of the node's Element.  After defeating your first Elemental node, you can move on to the more difficult Hybrid nodes, which represent the fusion of two Elements.

The inner ring of Hybrid nodes are more difficult than the pure Elemental nodes, but for a real challenge ( and to unlock the best cards ), you need to attack the outer ring of Hybrid nodes, which are significantly harder than your first pure Elemental encounters.

The only way to unlock the first Hybrid Level 2 node is to clear its associated Level 1 node.  Once you have defeated your first Hybrid Level 2 node, you can "backdoor" into other Hybrid 2 nodes, bypassing Level 1 nodes if you want that extra challenge.

      Practice against AI

If you don't want to jump into the city map right away, you can pick up a pre-made deck and practice against the AI.  Once you're comfortable with the basics, you're free to build your own decks too.  Don't worry, all the cards are unlocked in practice mode.  Cards are only locked in Rogue Mode.

Our AI is challenging but not unbeatable, and will give you a great understanding of how to play with, and against, various types of opponents.

From day one, Manacaster was intentionally designed and engineered to be easy for an AI to play.  If you want the details on that, join our Discord and we'll be glad to tell you more.

      Challenge a player in PVP

There's a reason that world-champion caliber players call it "the most balanced card game they've ever played."  Games are often decided by one life point, one mana, or one card.  Yes, it is really that well-balanced.  All tournament-legal cards are unlocked in PVP mode.  No grinding just to play Arena; go battle on day one.

Prove you are superiorProve you are betterEnter the Arena

Two Ways to Build a Deck

In most game modes, you can select the type of Deck Construction method you'd like to use for the challenge.  Your opponent will be subject to the same rules, and the rewards of certain things ( like Elemental Nodes ) may change depending on which mode you select.

Constructed Mode: Select 50 Units and/or Actions, 13 Mana, and battle!   The typical "build-then-battle" mode where each player brings the deck of their choice.  Competitive players can test their skill in ranked ladder mode.

Draft Mode: Build your deck card-by-card while denying your opponent what they need to build theirs!   A cleverly modified snake-draft pick sequence keeps tensions high, and you can "Burn" cards to spite your opponent and get a random reward.  Supports ladder mode.

      Free Demo Available

NOTE: During the first few days of "launch week", the free demo will not be publicly available!
