Guide: Installing Mushroom Musume on Linux with Steam Proton

This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.

1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."

Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.

Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.

2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.

3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.

4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.

What is Mushroom Musume? Features and Description

Raise a mushroom from a spore into a fine young woman, then discover the twists and turns her life may take in this creepy-cute fairytale life simulation game.

Once upon a time, there was a lonesome Recluse, plagued with the desire to raise a child. Wandering nearby, the strange Witch of the Woods couldn't help but overhear this wish, and with a twisted humor gifted them a pot of dirt. Help guide the Recluse through the maze of fungal parenthood, then discover how many types of person (mushroom?) your Daughter can become!

When one Daughter falls, start over and discover new corners of the world... and a treasure trove of secrets and unlockables!

Raising a child is hard, raising a mushroom is no easier. Any little thing you do can change your Daughter's path in life - will she grow into a pretty little Fly Agaric or an uncanny and indomitable Cordyceps? A parent's role is key, so take it seriously... or perhaps you'd rather relax. There's always next time, after all!

The world of Mushroom Musume is fun and unusual, full of whimsical moments and unexpected dark corners. Discover shocking new outcomes and twists in familiar events by playing again as a different Daughter. Choose alternate paths, and gain a more complete picture of this odd world. Perhaps even spend time in a tale-within-a-tale and see the world through (slightly less) fungal-colored glasses...

Each Daughter grown earns you Spores, which you can then spend between runs to buy permanent upgrades. Cultivate your personal garden and gain improvements for future daughters, or maybe receive a rare item from the local summoning circle instead. Featuring exclusive music, unlockable mushroom girls, in-universe notes, and more!

You can find almost any color in fungi, and that's true of your Daughter too. Collect memories of Daughters past, colors, music, and more in your own personal Mushroom Almanac. With tons of treats to discover, foraging for everything could take years!

We offer an extensive demo of Mushroom Musume and welcome you to try it for yourself. The demo allows you to experience a wide slice of the game without any of the planned meta-progression elements, featuring...
  • 180,000+ words of story
  • Hundreds of photographs and illustrations
  • Over an hour and a half of beautiful and haunting music
...So please, take a seat and enjoy your time spent as a mycological parent!

User Reviews

“I really like Mushroom Musume. It's cuddly yet nasty, whimsical but rotten, eerie but enchanting and perhaps, endearing - a fairytale of the old school, in short.”
Rock Paper Shotgun

“This combination of diegetic character creation and semi-procedural storytelling leads to a plethora of mushroom girls and scenarios to see. It’s eminently replayable and super interesting every time you start up a new session. It’s almost like a digital solo TTRPG, and I like it a lot.”
No Escape

“I love roguelikes and I love secrets and I love weird games and I love mushroom girls, so here we are. Mushroom Musume rules. Treat your daughters well, or not.”
