This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.
1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."
Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.
Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.
2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.
3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.
4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.
2D metroidvania action with a unique control scheme. Forever chase and protect your cursor--but don't ever touch it. Explore the mysterious Forsaken World, navigate through its decay, and learn to fight in a completely new way. Persevere and destroy the Wall that's always been holding you back.
Venture into a desolate land where every step of progress must be earned through struggle. At every step of the way, see new beauties, uncover new mysteries, and hone your skill at a uniquely challenging one-of-a-kind experience where you must defend your cursor without letting yourself get too close to it. Journey through a great maze of caverns, windswept plains, and ruined forests—as stopping means death, you have no other choice. Find forgotten memories that grant ancient powers. Hear the messages of the Wall's master. Defy him, and make your way through its ramparts and towers. Are you ready for what’s at the top?
Your character always follows your cursor
If your character and cursor touch, you will take damage
If your character runs into a wall, you will take damage
The character and cursor share a health pool. If they run out of health, you die
After dying, you respawn at the start of the current room, only seconds back
Monsters move throughout the world and will try to hurt you in unique ways
Monsters damage you by either directly hitting your cursor, or using attacks to hurt your cursor from afar (except for [REDACTED])
Hitting an enemy with your character damages it, and deflects your character backwards
As you progress, you can learn additional ways to damage monsters
Killing monsters grants EXP, which can increase things like health, damage, and acceleration
Tight action gameplay filled with tactical decision making
Choose your own level of suffering! Difficulties range from “Painkiller” to “Everything hurts"
Expressive hand-drawn art for all sprites and levels with a deliberately janky aesthetic
A sometimes brooding, sometimes epic soundtrack to echo your journey through an unforgiving world
Push through perilous passageways
Fight fearsome foes
Find fragments of (alas, non-alliteratively) the past scattered throughout the world, and internalize them to gain new powers and open new paths
Discover [REDACTED]’s [REDACTED]s
Over 400 perilous levels, spread out across twelve mechanically and visually unique areas, from a lake infested with a swarm of tenticles, to [REDACTED REDACTED REDACTED], to a shadowy domain filled with spiders—and worse
40+ monsters with unique attack patterns, from giant swords that swing to attack you, to organs of pollution that drown you in clouds of smoke, to friendly hearts that share the gift of love with you (this gift is delivered in the form of a deadly laser)
40 levels with unique benefits to be gained (uhm, technically, you can only gain 39 levels because you start at level 1)
13 gripping boss fights
Possibly a few disappointing ones too
Over two hundred cosmetic collectables to be acquired through our slot machine loot box system which can be obtained by winning 10 battle royale games or by spending your parents' money
1 bullet point directly above this one that is not actually true
One Wall, to be destroyed
