This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.
1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."
Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.
Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.
2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.
3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.
4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.
A "creepy cozy" 3D adventure game about rebuilding a haunted ghost town, meeting weird creatures, and listening to ridiculous music!
Mayor May Knott is a “creepy-cozy” 3D adventure game about a shy girl who accidentally becomes mayor of a haunted ghost town!
Initially, May runs in fear from the monsters lurking about! But as she explores the town, solves puzzles, plays minigames, and fixes up houses and buildings, she becomes more confident, overcomes her fears, and discovers that the monsters are actually all very friendly and would love to help May around town!
Eventually, with the help of her newfound friends, May turns the abandoned ghost town into a thriving community, filled with a variety of delightfully creepy creatures.
Repair machines with Grandfather Clock, the clockwork retired rapper. Join Reel McKoi in fishing junk out of the polluted lake. Get your fortune read by the mysterious, sandwich-headed Madame Pastrami. And get insulted by Dick Tater, tyrannical owner of Glitzberg, the seedy apartment complex next door.
And that's just in the first 5 minutes!
Throughout the game, you'll find "records" to play on the Edjukebox in the Hall of Records. Those records teach you new recipes by playing original, professionally-produced songs spanning a huge range of genres -- from rap to rock, country to punk, girl-band to boy-band, and beyond!
There are all kinds of exciting things to do in Mayor May Knott, but here’s a rundown of the main activities:
Early in the game, May finds and fixes up a device for talking to ghosts. An “Ectophone” if you will. With the Ectophone, May can talk to the many ghosts haunting the houses around town, and try to help them remember their names.
Once May knows a ghost’s name, she can find their “record” in the Hall of Records, a combination record store and city archives. The Hall of Records is also home to the “Edjukebox”, a machine used to play the original, professionally-produced song on each record!
By listening to a new record, May learns a new crafting or cooking recipe! This is called “Edjuke-ation”.
Armed with the recipes from the Edjukebox, May can cook and craft exactly what each ghost needs to move on, leaving behind the key to their house!
The game cycles between day and night, and monsters have their own schedules of things to do. Sometimes the secret to making a new friend is to catch them at the right time, meet them in the right place, or build up the courage to talk to them!
By getting house keys from ghosts, and giving them to the monsters you meet, you can make them permanent residents of your town! Each new resident helps out around the town in some way, and as you add them to your town you gain new options and opportunities to meet new ghosts and monsters, solve puzzles, play minigames, and explore new areas!
Mayor May Knott is brimming with puzzles and minigames, whether it’s a puzzle to deduce the name of a ghost, a quest to find ingredients for a tricky recipe, or a minigame to befriend a new monster.
There’s even a spooky abandoned mine / bowling alley, a haunted mansion full of puzzles, and a creepy endless hallway stalked by a terrifying creature!
As you unlock new areas, repair houses and buildings, and move new residents to your town, you breathe new life into your abandoned ghost town, turning it into a happy thriving community.
Perhaps eventually you can convince all of the monsters to live in your town… even the tyrannical Dick Tater!
