Guide: Installing Kagami: An Odyssey in Japanese Language Learning on Linux with Steam Proton

This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.

1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."

Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.

Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.

2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.

3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.

4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.

What is Kagami: An Odyssey in Japanese Language Learning? Features and Description

Explore! Interact! Play minigames! Fight SCARY MONSTERS! Well... mostly scary... All while you LEARN JAPANESE?!?! Learn alphabets, collect vocab, and use what you learned to gain advantage when battling Yokai! Keep fighting until you unravel what is causing all this chaos and never give up!

Kagami: An Odyssey in Japanese Language Learning (phew, what a long name! That means it MUST be GOOD!)

*Ahem* Anyways...

The game is meant to help those who want to learn Japanese in a FUN way! It is a top down RPG-Lite centered around exploration, finding vocabulary words in the world by interacting with objects, playing minigames, and using the vocabulary you learned in each area to gain advantage when fighting enemies! You might unravel a mystery, learn more than you thought you would, and become emotionally attached to some of the characters along the way! Like, who's this cute lil guy runnin' around? YOU'LL FIND OUT!

Fight alongside your party members against monsters that are mostly based on Yokai from Japanese folklore in that classic turn-based RPG kind of way! Level up to become proficient in physical and magical combat to deal devastating damage to your foes!

If you are new to learning Japanese, no problem! The game starts by teaching you the basics of Hiragana, one of the alphabets of the Japanese language! You also learn Katakana as well!

You will have access to all the “charms” or vocabulary words you collect to study when outside of battle through your trusty Game-Buddy, who manages everything from inventory to vocab to saving your game file. Game-Buddy also has a Hiragana and Katakana reference guide that include visual representations of mnemonics to help you retain all this new information and a sound clip of the kana being pronounced!

We do not use romaji, so be warned, you will either learn to read Hiragana and Katakana or you will not have a good time. Though we give you the resources to learn, it will ultimately be up to you to retain the knowledge needed to succeed, and we think anyone who really wants to learn can and will succeed!

Do you think you have what it takes? We think you do!
