This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.
1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."
Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.
Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.
2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.
3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.
4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.
You are the Nautikins, the dominant species on this ocean planet! Build boats, planes, and helicopters to explore a vast sea filled with islands and mysteries. Play in a sandbox with unlimited parts or a campaign where you strive to reach your goals. Embark with online multiplayer or singleplayer.
The Nautikins have evolved from a species similar to dolphins to inherit the planet after untold eons. They swim in a vast ocean and explore unique islands. Hire crews of Nautikins to operate your boats, planes, helicopters, submarines, and more!
There is an elaborate vessel building interface that allows you to build sea or air vessels in an open world drydock or runway respectively. Configure your boats, planes, jets, helicopters, submarines, airships, or anything in between with over 100 unique parts! With very few restrictions you can build almost anything you want. You can also deploy build areas anywhere in the map to build bases.
This game packs some pretty crazy custom physics for everything from buoyancy to airfoils! Your boats and planes will float on the surface of the water and interact with it, they can even land on it. Tackle center of mass in your designs and learn about what designs work best for your goals. You can also just crash a jet into the water in a spectacular explosion! Tied in with the physics system is a deformation / damage system for all vessels. If your vessel is damaged you may need to repair it to prevent sinking or fires!
Once you have built a sea worthy vessel, there are various activities you can do like deliveries, rescues, treasure hunts, and more. There are also combat related activities which allow you to battle AI enemies.
A massive open world / ocean map filled with islands awaits you! Be warned though! If you go to far out to sea (currently ~100km), the sea monsters may think you are lunch. This ocean comes with complete underwater environments around the islands covered in seaweed, fish, sharks and more!
There are 2 game modes, sandbox and campaign. Sandbox is the default mode and allows you to build with every resource available! This mode is best for those still learning to play the game or just looking for quick fun. Campaign is meant for those who desire a greater challenge and are well versed in the game mechanics. You will have to unlock all the parts and earn shells in order to reach your goals. Achievements can only be earned in campaign.
Multiplayer supports every feature that is supported in single player for up to 16 players. You can build boats and deploy them and your friends will see them and be able to crew or captain them. Some functionality may be authorized only by the owner of the server depending on the effect.
One of the more unique activities in the game is fighting pirates. Pirates will shoot at your vessels, operate frigates, tankers, jets, and more! They can be a serious threat. You can also configure your own bot crew members to operate vessel mounted weapons like deck cannons or missile launchers. They can even operate your boat for you!
Physical weather systems (Rain, Storms, Fog, Wind, etc.) move around the map and can be monitored for your vessels safety on a journey. The further away from the protection of the islands the more intense the affect the weather will have on your vessel and the ocean waves around you. Be prepared for severe weather such as "tidal" force waves and whirlpools.
The game includes a very basic low profile text based chat to allow for communication during multiplayer. It is intended primarily as a quick message relay and to aid players in connecting on Discord or Steam chat.
