Guide: Installing BeatShot on Linux with Steam Proton

This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.

1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."

Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.

Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.

2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.

3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.

4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.

What is BeatShot? Features and Description

BeatShot is rhythm-based aim-trainer that syncs targets to your music. Create custom game modes, view your stats on BeatShot's website, and make aim-training less of a chore.

BeatShot is rhythm-based aim-trainer that syncs targets to your music. Play the default game modes, create custom game modes, and view your stats in-game and on the BeatShot website.

A BeatShot account is automatically created for you using your Steam ID when you first launch the game. You can sign in through Steam on the website to view your scores anywhere.

How does the audio analyzer work?

The analyzer keeps a rolling average of the frequency values across multiple channels. When it detects a change in frequency that is very different from the current rolling average, targets are spawned. You can change how sensitive the analyzer is to frequency changes for each channel using the settings menu.

When you provide the game with a song file, it analyzes a separate audio track from the one you actually hear. This offset allows the game to account for reaction time. Here's a short breakdown, using 250 milliseconds for reaction time:

The idea is to destroy the target at the bright green color. Reaction time is one of the settings changed across difficulties in default game modes, but can customized using the Spawn Beat Delay setting in custom modes.

Default Game Modes

Default game modes are meant to provide baseline functionality and show what custom settings are used to make them.

  • Multi-Beat: continuously spawn targets
  • Single-Beat: only one at a time
  • Beat-Track: tracking one target
  • Beat-Grid: static grid of activating targets
  • Cluster-Beat: multiple targets spawn at once, each activated separately
  • Charged Beat-Track: Multiple moving targets that require 2+ shots to destroy

Custom Game Modes

Customize your own game mode from scratch, a default mode template, or a previously created custom mode. There are currently 40+ customizable settings, including:

  • Spawn area height/width, including dynamic spawn area height/width
  • Minimum and maximum size of targets, including dynamic target sizing
  • Spawn beat delay
  • Max target lifespan
  • Target spawn cooldown
  • Multiple target movement settings
  • Minimum distance between targets
  • Target activation conditions
  • Target deactivation conditions
  • Target destruction conditions
  • And a lot more
