Guide: Installing Golden Record Retriever on Linux with Steam Proton

This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.

1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."

Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.

Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.

2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.

3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.

4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.

What is Golden Record Retriever? Features and Description

⟪Golden Record Retriever⟫ is a rogue-like DICE building game in which a golden retriever kidnapped by aliens grows into a space hero by retrieving the golden records that have become a "space headache.”

The main character of ⟪GRR⟫, "River", had an owner named Paul. Paul, who was an inventor, had a longing for space and aliens, and in the end, he used all his money to build a spaceship. Soon, the spaceship left for space, loaded with golden records playing friendly greetings from Paul.

But without hearing an answer, Paul died of an illness.

Some time later, when River was alone in an empty house, a group of aliens arrived. "The golden records of your human friend are causing cosmic chaos. You yourself will go to the troubled planets and retrieve the records," said one of the aliens. After that, no one on Earth ever saw River again…

Forced to become a hero of the universe, you (as River the golden retriever, as you may have noticed) must now gather companions to form a team. As you send your colleagues into the field on your behalf and give commands, you will need to think deeply, be patient, and make bold decisions to resolve each situation.

But here's a problem.
How is any of this possible when your only options are ALIENS and you can't leave the Captain's office?

The answer is below.

Combination of engine-building and puzzle-solving

When you start the game, the aliens give you a new mission. They tell you on which planet a golden record has fallen and what the consequences are. Your destination isn't just one click away, you have to pass at least 20 planets. But this means that you will have enough chances to build your team.
What makes up your team are your teammates, or should we say your "dice". Each die represents one of your teammates' skills and probability-based abilities(Sides).

All of your colleagues have their own unique set of skills & abilities, but most of their activities add up to leave Auras on the board.

The reason you need Auras is that most of the situations you will encounter on alien planets require a minimum number of Auras to be created, or a certain shape in which Auras are placed.

Likewise, the reason you need the best teamwork is to make Auras better. Think about the synergy between the dice and the value of your entire team as you would in any rogue-like deck-building game, but also think about what combination of dice will make Auras the way you want them to be.

And,
every situation you encounter presents actions(we call them quests) that can be chosen as an option, just like in classic MUD games.

It's up to you to decide which quest to use to resolve the situation, but the choices vary greatly depending on how your team is built.

For example, your team may be called an Aura Machine Gun, but not a solver of some quests that require elaborate arrangements of Auras.

Or they can be genius planners who can create auras very very meticulously, but become nothing in the face of enormous threats. And that kind of deviation will change the pattern of aura creation and your choices as well.

Narratives inspired by legacy board games

⟪GRR⟫ is heavily inspired by the legacy board game genre. Each mission to collect a single Golden Record follows the roguelike format, but the choices and actions you make within a mission have a lasting effect on the intelligence and planets that live in that universe.

When resolving a situation on a planet, it's certainly good to go for an easy and quick option. But if you see any, consider some other options to buy the planet's favor. The planet that likes you will remember your warm heart and repay you someday.

Moreover, the planets you helped and those you couldn't will meet different fates in the great vortex created by the forces that seek to dominate the universe. And the increasing number of decaying planets will never help you complete your mission.

Please don't limit your imagination before playing ⟪GRR⟫, because it also includes:

  • 70 characteristic teammates(=dice)
  • 3 destinations (basically)
  • 200+ visitable planets and countless routes
  • 100+ gears for teammates
  • Formula Deck: quest-type card deck for emergencies

All names and stories in this game are fictional and have nothing to do with actual events or history.
We also apologize for some of the images on this page, as they are in Korean. Except for those included in the demo version, most of the game's content has not yet been translated into English. We will do our best to localize GRR for global players as soon as possible.
