Guide: Installing Soul Shard on Linux with Steam Proton

This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.

1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."

Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.

Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.

2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.

3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.

4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.

What is Soul Shard? Features and Description

Soul Shard is a 3D platformer, 2-player local coop game set in a Victorian London Steampunk factory. Nimue and her sidekick Ambrose, a cyborg bear, are on a mission to destroy the factory so that it can no longer produce cyborg laborers that the owner has been using to replace the working class.

Soul Shard is a 3D platformer, 2-player local coop game set in a Victorian London Steampunk factory. Young Nimue, a 12-year old child inventor, and here sidekick Ambrose, a cyborg bear of her invention, are on a mission to destroy the factory so that it can no longer produce cyborg laborers that the owner has been using to replace the working class. The game uses an "artifact" placement mechanic that creates dynamically generated platforms which vary in shape and size depending on the use of one to three artifacts. The artifact placement, and therefore platforms, are generated by Ambrose while Nimue has the ability to change their nature. They use these platforms to progress through the factory by solving puzzles and facilitating Nimue's avoidance of the cyborg enemies. They will complete their mission successfully by destroying "The Assembler" in the final puzzle challenge.

The four types of platforms include:

  • Static - Defies gravity and remains in a fixed position in mid-air
  • Bounce - Allows characters to bound on it, and allows Nimue's momentum to create a more significant bounce
  • Gravity - Is affected by physics, including gravity, but can also be used as a lever
  • Ghost - Temporarily renders Nimue invisible to the enemy cyborgs

The test-build for the game is available as of mid-May 2022, and the team projects a final publication on/about 1 August 2022. We appreciate any and all feedback including the metrics provided by Steam, but please be aware that this is a game with intentionally limited scope, intended to highlight the talents of the team and to support their portfolios. Gameplay is short, but we hope to present a finely polished product in the final outcome.

We welcome you and thank you for taking the time to look at our game.

Regards,
