Guide: Installing Unending War: Grand-Strategy Chess on Linux with Steam Proton

This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.

1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."

Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.

Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.

2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.

3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.

4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.

What is Unending War: Grand-Strategy Chess? Features and Description

Chess. The Unending War. But why are these battles being fought? And what really happens when two knights do battle? Enter the world of Chess. Where Seven Gods vie for power and worship in a never-ending war!

Why are chess battles being fought? And what happens when two pawns clash? These are the questions that ‘Unending War’ answers.

In a fantasy setting; seven gods battle to conquer a vast and brutal world. Taking control of one of these, you must battle your way across a strategic map, securing resources, conquering locations, and building fortresses and supply depots.

Each province taken requires a chess battle, but as you’ve never played before. Supply lines determine the size of your army so that battles can be vastly uneven. More dramatic still: each time pieces collide on the board, the defending god can intercede with an arbitration, causing an rpg style battle to ensue. In these battles strategic resources can be used to devastating effect, and with enough mana, iron, and worship, a pawn might even turn back a queen!

FEATURES:

A new, three-tier strategy game with chess at its core, a strategic world-map above, and individual battles below.

The Strategic Map

  • Over 650 provinces to conquer, each upgradeable with a variety of buildings..
  • 7 gods and a mixture of other enemies and AIs to battle.
  • A mixture of terrains that encourage (but not force) realistic empire sprawl patterns.
  • Different visuals depending on which god owns a province.
  • Skirmish battles to lower the supply, defence, or difficulty of a province, based on thousands of mid-game, high-level chess games.
  • Magic that can change the strategic layout of the map by raising mountains, burning forests, and more.

The Chess Game

  • - Difficulty levels that can be scaled to match the player, meaning that you are never overwhelmed.
  • A vast range of difficulty levels from complete beginner to GM.
  • Standard Chess, Chess 960, and uneven chess games are all offered through the strategy map.
  • Each chess board tile is a unique location, offering different bonuses that can be useful during arbitrated battles.
  • A selection of overlays which show the map as a more standard chess board.

The Arbitrated Battles

  • A simple, yet effective, RPG style battle system.
  • Each different chess piece has its own health, bonuses, and cost to arbitrate.
  • Health does not recover after battles allowing several smaller pieces to coordinate to take down a larger one.
  • Strategic resources can turn the tide of battles with spells, insights, and constructions.
  • Not every chess encounter can be arbitrated, resources gained from the strategy map need to be conserved for critical encounters.
