Guide: Installing Area 51: The 9/20 Massacre on Linux with Steam Proton

This guide describes how to use Steam Proton to play and run Windows games on your Linux computer. Some games may not work or may break because Steam Proton is still at a very early stage.

1. Activating Steam Proton for Linux:
Proton is integrated into the Steam Client with "Steam Play." To activate proton, go into your steam client and click on Steam in the upper right corner. Then click on settings to open a new window. From here, click on the Steam Play button at the bottom of the panel. Click "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles."

Alternatively: Go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and turn on the "Enable Steam Play for Supported Titles" option.

Valve has tested and fixed some Steam titles and you will now be able to play most of them. However, if you want to go further and play titles that even Valve hasn't tested, toggle the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" option.

2. Choose a version
You should use the Steam Proton version recommended by Steam: 3.7-8. This is the most stable version of Steam Proton at the moment.

3. Restart your Steam
After you have successfully activated Steam Proton, click "OK" and Steam will ask you to restart it for the changes to take effect. Restart it. Your computer will now play all of steam's whitelisted games seamlessly.

4. Launch Stardew Valley on Linux:
Before you can use Steam Proton, you must first download the Stardew Valley Windows game from Steam. When you download Stardew Valley for the first time, you will notice that the download size is slightly larger than the size of the game.
This happens because Steam will download your chosen Steam Proton version with this game as well. After the download is complete, simply click the "Play" button.

What is Area 51: The 9/20 Massacre? Features and Description

The 9/20 army is at the gates. You and a few other soldiers are all that's standing between Area 51 and them. Will you survive?

You play as a commander, charged with the defense of Area 51 on the 20th of September, 2019. Many believe nothing will happen that day, yet the Air Force cannot afford to risk revealing what's inside the base. Will they manage to get through?

Collect health packs, ammo, normal and alien guns and defend Area 51. Who knows, your superiors might have to reveal some of the base's secrets to you if they want to survive the onslaught.

* Defend against waves of enemies across multiple levels
* Collect multiple types of guns, such as shotguns, rifles and grenade launchers
* Fight against many types of enemies, including but not limited to Karens, Kyles and Florida men
* Explore Area 51 underground as the enemy keeps pushing you and your soldiers deeper and deeper

The game is a top down mix of bullet hell and wave survival. You usually start off with a basic gun, such as a pistol and as the waves get harder, you collect more powerful guns such as alien shotguns. Enemies drop health packs, ammo and guns. There is both friendly AI, the soldiers, snipers and others and enemy AI. Your job is to protect your soldiers and to help them defend the base. Some of the environment, such as sandbags and cacti, are destructible and serve as obstacles. Barrels and other heavy objects can be pushed into strategic locations to hinder the enemy's movement. You need to employ a vast variety of tactics if you wish to survive the massacre.

The game has been inspired by the Facebook event Storm Area 51.
